The Rolex Submariner made its first appearance in public in 1954 at the Swiss Watch Fair, and probably reached more eyes worldwide by way of James Bond movies. Of all the models released by Rolex, the Submariner is the most internationally popular. In trying to discern the appeal of this particular watch, its uniqueness should certainly be noted. The watch was manufactured originally for divers. First designed to be waterproof at around 1,000 feet, it has evolved to endure a depth of even 4,000 feet. Today’s models look strikingly similar to the 1960s design. These early watches were beautifully simple and minimalist, without even a date function to disturb the smoothness of the sapphire crystal. Also in contrast to the leather straps that appeared on many watches of the time, Bond’s watch was entirely stainless steel. Finally, it does not have a crown for the winding stem, contributing to its minimalist and unique appearance. Relatively large especially for its time, the watch is still popular today precisely because its iconic Bond look is preserved in the contemporary design. Like so many things in film that become legendary, the Submariner worn by Sean Connery in the first James Bond movie, Dr. No, was largely coincidental. The story is, the production company couldn’t afford a Rolex for Connery and they couldn’t procure one free of charge. Fortuitously, producer Cubby Broccoli had a Rolex Submariner and gave it to Connery to wear just before they started shooting. For people today hoping to acquire the James Bond look, a Rolex Submariner replica is a great option. Identical to the original, such a watch will allow you to participate in the Bond legend without emptying your bank account. If you’re unable or unwilling to pay for a watch even Dr. No’s production company couldn’t acquire, consider a Rolex Submariner replica . |
